Alison and Ron's Albanian blog. I have now been working in the public school system in Albania for almost two years. I have visited in many classrooms and have visited many schools, both in towns and villages.
In fact, I have been taken to visit with children the local authorities and teachers have concluded have disabilities throughout the region where I live in northern Albania. I have talked with the school directors, teachers, psychologists, the children themselves and, on occasion, the parents. First of all, what gives me the authority to make any conclusions about the state of children with disabilities in Albania?
In addition, I have worked with people with disabilities for 40 years both in clinical and administrative settings. Plus, I have raised children with disabilities, a son and a nephew with learning disabilities and a niece with developmental disabilities. With all that in my background, what did I conclude? But they do have the apathy that was prevalent in the States 40 years ago. That apathy cultivated an attitude of disinterest in the unfortunate circumstances of people with disabilities.
It also produced attitudes of pity that only resulted in sentimental stories and anecdotes used to amuse readers and observers. Interestingly, one situation that is still prevalent in pockets in the US and seems to be rampant here in Albania is the tendency to hide family members with disabilities, particularly intellectual disabilities.
