Russian scientists are warning of the threat of sudden and dramatic methane explosions creating new giant craters in northern Siberia. The experts are using satellites to monitor at least one ice and soil hump - known as a pingo - which they fear can soon erupt. Cities and towns, along with natural gas pipelines in northern regions, are said to be most at risk as global warming is blamed for melting permafrost and releasing the potentially explosive gas.
Russian scientists are warning of the threat of sudden and dramatic methane explosions creating new giant craters example pictured in northern Siberia. Cities and towns, along with natural gas pipelines in northern regions, are said to be most at risk as melting permafrost is releasing the potentially explosive gas.
At special risk is the Yamal Peninsula, the location of the world's largest natural gas reserves, said scientists from the Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics in Novosibirsk. The warning follows detailed study of one of dozens of new craters spotted in remote regions of Siberia in the past year and a half.
In particular, Russian scientists spent months over the summer examining enormous craters that had appeared in the Yamal region of Siberia. After months of research, scientists believe the giant holes were originally a phenomenon known as a pingo. This is a subsurface accumulation of ice that has been covered by land.
