What scholars often refer to as 'literary' travel writing was originally conceived as a vehicle for the record of leisured touring, a new type of private elite travel that became fashionable in Western Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Literary travel writing flourished during the subsequent reign of Catherine II , when epistolary accounts of leisured journeys and carefully maintained travel diaries became standard literary forms.
It explores when and how Russians began to think that travel should be recorded in a literary fashion and how their records led to the development of the literary genre.
This article also demonstrates the important role played by cultural and social factors in a genre too often conceived in terms of its strictly textual characteristics. As will become apparent, the peculiar social characteristics of this aristocratic group left an enduring trace on the development of the literary genre. These include a marked orientation towards Western European tradition, attention to the figure of the narrator, and a variety of formal structures and stylemes which are isolated and described in this article.
