Arrests of sex traffickers are down, fewer victims are getting mandated services and some experts say trafficking will grow on Long Island without more aggressive law enforcement. Arrests and successful prosecution of traffickers have dropped dramatically since , despite millions in government grants aimed at curbing sex trafficking.
Sex trafficking cases have declined from a peak of 77 cases in to just five cases in , the latest data available, according to the New York State Division of Criminal and Justice Services. Moreover, bureaucratic obstacles block services for victims, particularly child victims, according to advocates.
