To browse Academia. The first three attempts to compare the mathematical and statistical properties of Rongorongo, the Easter Island script, with the statistical properties of the Rapanui language of the Polynesian inhabitants of Easter Island Rapa Nui were characterized by the fact that they were carried out largely without considering the shape of the glyphs.
The first work started from the erroneous assumption that the writing was purely syllabic. The results of the second work were also not yet convincing. However, looking at individual tablets revealed the existence of an intersection set of around 80 glyphs that was used by all scribes.
The hypothesis of a syllabic-logographic script thus became more likely for Rongorongo. This observation was confirmed in the third work. The core set was examined more closely and further narrowed down to 55 characters. What was irritating was the observation that when comparing the words and syllables previously assigned to the glyphs, no connection was recognizable. It seemed that sometimes syllables from the middle of the word could apparently be used for reading.
That pointed to a bigger problem. A completely different approach was therefore chosen in the fourth work: Based on the descriptions and names given to the glyphs by Metoro, which Jaussen listed and are reproduced by Barthel and Wolff. In addition, as many further corresponding glyphs as possible were sought. This allowed Metoro's telegram-style reading of Aruku Kurenga to be reconstructed and confirmed, at least for the first line of this tablet.
