Hearing Brazil brings together, for the first time in English, research into the diverse music genres, performers, and social narratives that reveal the unique cultural territory of Minas Gerais. The intertwined musical spaces of regionalism are found in the physical locations of geographic place, the historical spatiality of communities and the history of people, and within the consciousness of practitioners for whom musical meaningfulness includes identity of place.

A nineteenth-century coffee boom in Brazil's Southeast energized the economic and political power of Minas Gerais, and re-introduced a massive influx of enslaved Africans and Afro-Brazilians.
Hearing Brazil examines musical communities, dance traditions, musical instruments, performers, issues of race, religiosity, and socio-cultural developments that have created the cornerstones of regional identity.
