To browse Academia. The narrative portrays this as an ongoing, highly contested, and fundamentally gendered process unfolding from the early 20th century on. The book draws on 13 years of archival and ethnographic research in and around the famous Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Labrang Tashi Khyil to situate this process in the violent disjunctures of Maoist socialist transformation s and the ambivalent transition to Dengist capitalist market reforms in the s and 90s.
In 8 chapters, I utilize a synthesis of social theory drawn from the anthropology of religion and ritual, political economy, gender studies and linguistic anthropology to demonstrate that Sino-Tibetan relations in this frontier zone were most fundamentally structured by the dialogue between different androcentric social orders, Geluk lamas' "mandalization" efforts on the one hand and Chinese imperial and national regimes on the other.
This process, I conclude, had differential effects for Tibetan men and women under both Maoist socialist transformation and Dengist capitalist reforms, situating women and femininities especially as disproportionately responsible for both utopic modern progress and threatening social dissolution.
