This being the true end of the trip, I can now reflect on the experience as a whole. We had a fraction of the resources we have at home, a group of people from all different points in nursing, and different careers as a whole. We had foreign living conditions and, for many of us, complete language barriers. Yet we were able to see and treat over people in five days. I know many of us, myself included, walked into this trip knowing only our professors. Many of our translators were new to the group.
The three nurse practitioner students came in knowing only each other. But when I tell you by day two we were all friends, I am not kidding. Everyone encouraged and supported each other, everyone kept the main goal in mind, which was to help as much as we could, and everyone had fun karaoke kings and kueens, am I right? And I now leave with a large group of new friends and let me just say, once you bond over five days of cold showers and pickup truck rides through rivers in a monsoon, that bond is never broken.
I have no idea where to begin saying thank you. They were the ones who you would go to with a difficult patient, and who coordinated every single detail from daily directions, to assignments, to where the nearest colmada was so we could get a cold drink after a long day. They planned out what supplies we needed this year, and have already started planning for next year.
They coordinated with Joanna to make sure we were putting our efforts where they were most needed. They kept us safe, and warned us what to do and not do. They followed up with any patient in clinic who would need more care after we left. They are brilliant, and their job goes far beyond nursing. Without them, none of us would have done this.
