The reproductive health and violence subscales presented higher distribution of high GEM scores Male Dominican adolescent and young adults present mixed attitudes about gender equity, reporting gender equitable mindset for violence and reproductive health. Further research should explore how perceptions of gender roles impact family planning decisions, pregnancy prevention, STIs, and gender-based violence.
It is estimated that by 19 years of age, the majority of males have already experienced their first sexual encounter [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. As such, providing adequate, appropriate and timely sexual and reproductive health care to adolescent males remains an ongoing public health concern [ 4 , 5 ].
For example, adolescent males are less likely to seek healthcare [ 5 , 6 , 7 ], report protective sexual behaviors or knowledge of sexually transmitted infections STIs than their female counterparts [ 3 , 8 ]. At a global level, masculinity is often associated with characteristics like physical toughness, autonomy, stoicism and sexual prowess [ 9 , 10 ], while girls are perceived as more demure in nature [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ].
This is relevant because negative attitudes about masculinity have been associated with unfavorable health outcomes [ 16 , 17 ], and pose a challenge to health providers and policymakers trying to shift to gender equitable norms [ 3 , 18 ]. In order to adequately respond to sexual and reproductive health needs, it is imperative to understand the individuals in a societal context [ 19 , 20 ].
