The lyric Greek chorus is basically composed of a number of dancers, male or female, called chorus-members and a person, male or female, who directs them, called the choregos.
Beginning with the members of the chorus, I shall examine the different elements, number, age, order, and so on, that render them a homogeneous group, then the relationships blood relations, companionship, and so on that bind them together.
But since the activity of the choregos can only be determined dialectically, in relation to that of the singers, its definition will lead us back to an examination of the chorus as a coherent whole. And finally, the problem of the choral forms and literary genres, through which the female chorus is expressed in ancient Greece, will be addressed.
