The nice thing about Haapsalu — in addition to its lovely old wooden houses, the sea, and the fabulous old railway station — is that they show really good movies there in a big cultural centre and the tickets cost only 4 euros. First of all, it is quite rare, even nowadays, to see films that are about female artists, that have female protagonists, and that are based on historical female characters. There are so many films made of male artists think of Vincent van Gogh, for instance, or Shakespeare, or Mozart, or Picasso, or Chaplin, or J.
Sure, there is Sylvia about Sylvia Plath, but the film mainly concentrates on her relationship with her husband, the poet Ted Hughes. Yes, we have Frida about Frida Kahlo, but that also circles around her tortured marriage with the painter Diego Rivera. Miss Austen Regrets , a brilliant and more biographically accurate film, is about the middle-aged Austen, and shows her as a writer, but still, even as the title suggests, the whole movie is about whether she regretted turning down one or perhaps two or three of her suitors.
I realised this yet again — but it still baffles me every time — after seeing Unga Astrid , A Star is Born , and Colette. Only A Star is Born actually shows a romance, between Ally and Jack played by Cooper , but all three films convey the very disturbing message that a female artist essentially needs a man in order to become an artist.
