Twelve cases have been presented as archaeological evidence for Greek and Roman women doctors. Nine are burials. These offer case studies of the problems of doing gender archaeology, especially in its intersection with mortuary analysis.
Unfortunately none is solid evidence. Either the deceased cannot be proven to the female, or the grave goods cannot be proven to be definitively medical, or there is insufficient evidence of a professional practice of medicine. A tool of uncertain use inscribed with what might be a female name has been taken as showing a woman doctor. Two stelae show medical instruments and either a female name or a female figure, but nothing clear can be deduced.
The literary and inscriptional evidence for women doctors is overwhelming but we do not as yet have good evidence from other material remains and these cases should be used with caution.
