Based on a Israeli film of the same title, its pleasures are subtle and quiet. It exists on a human scale, and feels like a show for adults. Which is not to undersell the considerable attributes of "The Band's Visit," whose national touring company is in residence through Nov. I actually loved it, and was intrigued from the deadpan opening scene, set in a Tel Aviv bus station, through the rousing musical finale.
It is there that a traveling Egyptian band, whose musicians are dressed in military-like matching uniforms, arrives by accident. A simple mispronunciation of the band's intended concert destination -- Bet Hativka instead of Petah Tikva -- causes the ticket clerk to issue tickets to the wrong place.
And so these musicians, a low-key bunch of men, turn up in a drab, hot and uneventful place. What happens next? Certainly nothing extraordinary. Strangers meet. Connections are made. Wonderful music, often with a Middle-Eastern feel, is played by musician characters who are actual musicians.
There are no tap-dance numbers but there is a lively sequence set at a roller disco. There are some laughs, some poignant moments, a hint of possible romance. The simple staging makes effective use of a turntable. One young guy spends the show staring at a pay phone, hoping it will ring for him. A would-be lothario uses the same pickup line -- "Do you like Chet Baker? A woman angrily walks out on her baby's father, then returns newly appreciative. And the next morning, the band's accidental visit is over.
