You really are. People can't help rooting for you, hoping you'll succeed. And I honestly think that, somewhere in there, you really do have what it takes. But you have to decide what it is you want, and pursue it. Otherwise, someday you'll look back at your life and all you'll have is 'what might have been.
Someday, I hope I won't remember every word Ella said to me that night. I hope I'll forget the taste of the pasta I ate that night, or the color of the top she wore, sitting across the table from me, telling me why she couldn't see me any more.
My name is Gordon Sullivan. I'm 27 years old; I'll turn 28 on 1 December. I'm originally from Coventry, but I'm really not from anywhere anymore. I don't really have an occupation, either. I was a fairly good footballer a few years ago, good enough to play semi-pro, but not good enough to make a decent living.
I'm better at being a student than anything else. That's what brought me to the USA. I was a graduate student in history at the University of Michigan, and for a while it appeared that I might have finally found my calling. I took my comprehensive exams and did well. That's when I decided I didn't really want to be a Ph. Ella was my girlfriend at the time. I didn't expect her to understand when I told her I didn't have any enthusiasm for continuing my degree, and I suppose I wasn't surprised when she ended the relationship a week or so later.
