I was unsure about writing this piece. Partly because I believe it is important to have healed before you speak publicly in the media about certain topics. Partly because I was unsure how to write about it. Individual words and actions, ways of being seen and perceived that chip away at your personhood.
And then of course, once you have put something out there for everyone to see, it is out there to be judged, criticised and questioned.
Writing is also a process of reliving and can uproot a lot of traumatic experiences. At the same time, there is a need for voices to echo and strengthen each other. There is the hope that with enough reverberation we can shatter the structures that facilitate our abuse.
There is equal cynicism on whether or not that will actually happen. I am talking about all of this because I want to make clear that it is not an easy feat to speak out, as survivors will tell you, time and time again.
