In this region, ecotonal variations in environments have shaped-and were in turn shaped by-cultural, political, and economic forces. Since the early 18th century three major events and shifts in regional and world systems dynamics affected significant economic and political changes on the highlands. First, the international ivory and slave trade increased in volume and organization; second, this led to an expansion of specialized pastoralism through an increased availability of cattle in the region; and third, at the end of the 19th century the region was included into a colonial state.
This article was prompted by a posthumous paper by W. After introducing Rangeley the article deals with early populations of the area: the Bakatanga and the pre-Bantu Batwa, goes on to an account of the archaeology, gives an outline of past climates and their influences, and closes with a short section on the disappearance of the Batwa.
This dissertation studies the functioning of large-scale systems of interaction and exchange on the East African Swahili coast by exploring their influence in the region around the town of Mikindani in southern Tanzania over the past two millennia. Evidence of connections across those systemsto the Middle East, South Asia, China, and the Mediterraneanexists in the form of trade goods, cultural and religious similarities, and historical documents.
