Justin Stott defended the masters 1 points race title, which he won in , along with the scratch race. This year, he backed up with gold in the keirin, an event in which riders pace behind a motorbike for 5 laps and then unleash a 2-lap sprint to the finish. Although Stott was unable to defend his scratch race title, he was in the hunt until the last six laps of the 8km event, won by Timaru rider Craig Domigan.
A talented junior in the past, Stott returned to competitive racing as a master and has since completed Tours of Southland in and , which he credits for some of his success on the velodrome. Park won bronze in the scratch race and silver in the m time trial behind Southlander Michael White, and should be a hot favourite to challenge for this event next year.
The masters 1 category is hugely competitive, boasting many names from yesteryear. The Otago team of Stott, Park and Stu Thomas impressed onlookers with a cohesive approach, which enabled them to win against other larger teams, including host Southland, which had maximum riders in all events. Otago's Lachie McGregor 15 made a significant breakthrough to pick up silver medals in the under points race and the individual pursuit.
