Peter Please, excuse my English. I'm Dutch. Today the North Sea oil fund or whatever else its called has funded tunnels. If you cycletour the busses will take you thro if it has a no cycling sign. Never had a problem with the tandem going into the luggage compartment. Most tunnels were strictly no-cycling, but that was never a problem. A few miles before the next anticipated tunnel I would look out for a cart-track or old road heading off round the hillside.

A relic from the past before the tunnel was created. The tunnel might have taken 20 minutes to cycle through but it might be several hours on the original route hence the reason for a tunnel in the first place. The detours were great - no traffic and lovely views. The few tunnels I could legally cycle through scared me somewhat.
