The Lisbon metro area is home to almost a third of the population of Portugal. Most pilgrims on the Caminho Portugues choose to start out in Porto. Another reason is simply that the scenery between Lisbon and Porto is less interesting, and the facilities for pilgrims fewer, than what you will find after Porto.
