The article which will be now presented constitutes a critical diagnosis on the appropriation of public spaces in Maputo, since the declaration of Independence of Mozambique. The explanation of a diagnosis on the evolutional process inherent to the altering of the social spectrum of the community in Maputo, one has to make reference to the colonial period, given the fact that the city we now find Maputo has been once planned by white Portuguese people, organized for the white and occupied by the white.
With this dynamics, the local black communities were always ostracized to the outskirts of the urban fabric, separated, with their own basic housing spaces. This social depiction endured for centuries in a geometrically planned city, layed down on an octagonal network — imposed —, where the regulating tracing — the avenues and blocks — were assumed as the morphological elements responsible for cosmopolitan urbanity and in which the space was designed to fulfil the needs and the habits of western whites.
This constituted one of the first moments which led to the altering of the colonial paradigm of public space in this city; this is therefore one of the most relevant moments of rupture. Later on, another moment was provoked by the civil war, which devastated Mozambique. The first one corresponded to a rational public space.
The second one corresponded to a space without infrastructures, product of a rather spontaneous occupation, forged among the void and the plenty, which were made material in time.
