It's not the fault of the actors, who turn in the best performances they can given the far-fetched and mannered story, one-dimensional characters and laughable dialogue. Kaya Scodelario plays Emanuel, given a boy's name by a mother who died in childbirth. She's now a teen and has spent her life traumatized by the event.
Raised by her caring father Dennis Alfred Molina , Emanuel is sullen and remote. But she emerges from her bubble occasionally to shock and annoy her clueless new stepmother Janice Frances O'Connor. When Linda Jessica Biel , a single mom with a newborn, moves into the Victorian house next door, Emanuel perks up a degree. The woman bears a resemblance to Emanuel's mother, and Emanuel offers to baby-sit Linda's baby daughter, Chloe.
Symbolic images of flooding water are overused, to numbing effect. The film is full of similarly misleading faux revelations. The overblown and inaccurate ones are fused with the occasionally factual revelations, but nothing feels emotionally authentic. While writer-director Francesca Gregorini creates a few moments of intriguing ambiguity, the film mostly veers between melodrama and cloyingly surreal fantasy.
Apparently, the story is trying to explore sorrow and the elaborate efforts the grief-stricken create to get through it. Thematically, that's fascinating. But as carried out here it comes off as ludicrous and empty, never illuminating. It's hard to buy that the self-absorbed Emanuel is suddenly moved by the plight of her next-door neighbor and wants to protect the illusory world Linda has created for herself. And the big reveal comes way too early. Biel initially does her best to make Linda seem nurturing, but when her secret is exposed, a dull, wide-eyed expression seems stuck on her face.
