This study attempted to inform the debate on the global impact of English via an examination of the validity and relevancy of the aforementioned theoretical positions through qualitative case study attitudes research with Chinese university students. Data that informed the study were drawn primarily from semi-structured interviews with four subjects, the transcripts from which were analysed in a two-stage coding process.

The key findings evidence both support and opposition to the key tenets of the theories under examination, with subjects considering English native speaker linguistic norms as superior while being generally critical of high-stakes international English testing.
