Hi, I am Karla! Born in Honduras and raised by Chinese parents, my life has been a blend of diverse cultures and traditions. At the age of nine, my family and I embarked on a journey to the United States and have been living in Miami, Florida ever since—a city known for its diverse culture; what a coincidence! I enjoy spending time with friends, myself, cooking, baking, listening to music, exercising, creating, and embracing new experiences.
However, I do know that Miami is renowned for its vibrant arts scene, beautiful beaches, lively parties, and rich cultural diversity, drawing influences from Latin America, the Caribbean, and more. Despite these wonderful aspects, when I think of Miami as someone living here, my mind often drifts to party-goers, chaotic traffic, the bipolar weather, the abundance of aspiring influencers, the constant construction, and the prevalence of cosmetic enhancements like Botox and plastic surgeries.
Nevertheless, Miami is truly a unique city that offers a blend of experiences unlike anything I had ever encountered in my hometown nor even in China. However, my approach has always been that of a tourist—experiencing these places, savoring the moments, taking pictures, and then moving on, without delving into their rich histories and cultural significance. This realization made me feel bad, as it seems disrespectful to not have taken the time to truly understand and appreciate the stories behind these remarkable location, especially when there are people who spend their time and efforts in preserving these locations for the future generations, like mine, to experience and learn the history of it.
I feel that I have missed out on a richer, more meaningful experience. Besides, since I am majoring in graphic design, I spend most of the time sitting down in front of a screen enclosed in a room, which is horrible for my health. With the help of this class and Professor John Bailly, I hope to develop a deeper appreciation for its rich tapestry of influences and gain insights into the stories and experiences that have shaped Miami into the vibrant metropolis it is today.
