Forty years on since its release The Shining has lost none of its potency, still able to terrify and mystify in equal measure. The audience is left alone, like the Torrance family, to imagine the lurking monsters as time leaps months ahead until slowing down, focusing down upon the final day when the terror emerges. Horror always claws at something on a deeper level. Jack is desperate to be isolated from the rest of the world, while he struggles to remain calm during his job interview.
After the first month in the Hotel, Jack becomes aggressive towards his loving wife Wendy Shelley Duvall. Danny meekly asks Jack whether he would hurt Wendy or Danny himself.
He bears a sense of inadequacy as a provider and the feeling, reflected in the film, that the obligations of being a husband and a father are stalling his writing ability. Jack is consistently distant from both Wendy and Danny, physically separated from his wife and child as their day unfolds simultaneously. In the montage of their first conversation Wendy appears within a close-up, the camera angled from the ground up.
Jack by contrast is framed in a medium close-up, the camera angled above him. Jack, now mad, is seemingly in control between the pair.
