Greetings from south of the DMZ. Got Van Morrison crooning away in the background, and ready to rumble now. Before we hit the road properly, a couple of over-looked items from our earlier bulletins…. The chopsticks are beautiful, though. Suspended fishing nets, lowered into the river then raised again to check the catch of the day!
The bamboo winch-house for the nets often doubles as home for the fishermen. My brilliant research assistant, a South African chap called Dr. Wik E. Larger boats also use them as lightweight landing craft, making beach access to moored boats easy. Coming ashore from fishing vessel, north of Nha Trang. Anyway, what put me in mind of the coracles in the first place was a rather peculiar sight from Dong Hoi. It was quite rhythmic in sound, and seemed semi-effective, but was nevertheless a little odd.
The Citadel is a different place in the dry, although we simply settled for riding around it. The surrounding countryside is also very nice, and fairly typical of central Vietnam, so well worth a look too. In true South-East Asian style, as the first drops fell about half a dozen raincoat and umbrella sellers appeared, and we grabbed a couple of plastic ponchos for the trip to town, even though our hotel had sent a driver to meet us.
Just as well, as all the driver did was walk us 50m to a taxi and bundle us in! The rains really started now, and we spent the afternoon there playing cards and drinking copious amounts of really good coffee. These stainless steel cups, with an internal weighted filter to hold the coffee down, sit directly on top of the coffee cup, hot water is then poured into the filter and slowly drips into the cup below — the result depending on how much coffee is used is anything from a nice strong cup of coffee to an espresso style mud — but really good coffee!
